Fourfold

About Fourfold

Fourfold is an independent practice product for Western Australian families with a child in Year 5 preparing for Gifted and Talented selection. The test is the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET), sat in Year 6.

Who we are

A parent registers, adds a student with a name and a PIN, and can see that student's practice from the parent account. The student works on the linked profile. Plan differences are listed on the pricing page.

Fourfold is a practice product. It is not a school, and it does not provide in-person tutoring.

How we write questions

Questions are written on five bands, from a single straightforward step to items that need a less familiar approach. A practice set mixes bands.

  1. 1The step is direct. The information needed is in the question.
  2. 2One inference, or a calculation in two steps.
  3. 3Information has to be combined from more than one place.
  4. 4The method is longer, and the steps have to stay in order.
  5. 5The structure is less familiar. The first obvious step is not enough.

Multiple-choice questions have four options. Each wrong option is written for one mistake a student might make, such as miscounting a start day, reading only one of two rules, or copying a number from the question. That mistake is tagged on the option.

Validators check multiple-choice items for four different options, one keyed answer, an explanation, and a mistake tag on each wrong option. Reading, quantitative reasoning, and abstract reasoning each have their own checks. Writing is different: a prompt is checked for a theme, a stimulus, and tags, and the student writes a response rather than choosing A–D. A sampled review can also be run against an examiner-style rubric. Passing a check means the item meets those rules. It does not make the item an official ASET question.

One original example

This item was written for this page. It is not from an official paper, and it is not in the practice bank.

A library loan is 14 days. Sam borrows a book on 3 March. The due date is the last day of the loan, and 3 March counts as day 1. The book is due on 16 March.

Wrong options with no particular mistake

  • 20 March
  • 3 April
  • 9 March

The same stem, one mistake each

  • 17 March — added 14 to the day number, so 3 March was not counted as day 1
  • 14 March — used the length of the loan as the calendar date
  • 18 March — counted 15 days instead of 14

The official ASET

Fourfold is not affiliated with ACER or the WA Department of Education. It is not an official GATE program. Section order and timings in a full mock follow the published ASET structure. The lengths are on About the ASET.

Application dates, eligibility, and the test itself are published by the Department on the GATE testing page. That page states that practice-test results are not used when offers are made. A score in Fourfold is a practice score. It is not an official ASET result, and it is not an offer of a place.

Tutoring centres

A tutor can sit with a child, watch the working, and explain the next step in the room. Fourfold is for the repeated part of preparation: the same four sections, on a timer, with a record of what was attempted.

Some families use practice only. Some use a tutor only. Some use both. The product does not replace a person who knows the child.

A full four-section mock is included on Fourfold Practice and Fourfold Plus. Timed section drills are included on Fourfold Practice and Fourfold Plus. The Free plan includes untimed multiple-choice practice (20 Q / day).
